About this Recipe

A unique way of presenting your favorite ‘kaanda bhajiya’, or onion fritters, that will leave a lasting impression. While blooming onion is usually made using eggs, we’ve used an eggless approach.

Ingredients

  • 6 small onions
  • 1 cup gran flour (besan)
  • 1 tsp jeera powder
  • 1 tsp haldi powder
  • 1 tsp chilly powder
  • 1 tsp salt (or as per taste)
  • 3 cups oil
  • 1/2-1 cup oil
  • 1 pinch asafoetida

Easy-to-make blooming onions that are in great demand during the monsoon and winter seasons. This fried dish is perfect for snack, and goes well with raita, green chutney or chilly-garlic dip.

Delight your guests with this snack along with a freshly brewed cup of ginger tea.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Mix the gram flour, jeera powder, asafoetida powder, chilly powder, salt and turmeric powder in a pan. Add water and mix to fine paste.

Step 2

Take the onion. Keeping the root-side intact, cut the onion from the bottom, so it resembles a flower.

Step 3

Heat oil in a pan.

Step 4

Dip the onion in the gram flour paste, till it’s completely coated. Once the oil is hot enough, gently add the onion to fry. Fry it till the onion becomes golden brown.

Step 5
Serve the blooming onion with chutney, dip or raita.
